Combatting Indoor Allergies with an Air Purifier

For many of us, changing the seasons means more than just a wardrobe shift or a change in routine. For allergy sufferers, the onset of a new season can mean runny noses, constant sneezing, itchy eyes, and annoying post-nasal drip.

Now is the ideal time to improve the indoor air quality in your home. Whether you’re looking to find relief from indoor allergies or simply want to take a step towards improving your health, an air purifier can be a great tool for helping your family breathe easier.

What causes indoor allergies?

When temperatures drop, and we spend more time inside with the heat turned on, there is a greater chance for indoor allergy flare-ups. It could be dust from your HVAC system that has built up over the summer, dander, and hair from a pet that you’re spending more time indoors with, or irritation from secondhand or thirdhand cigarette smoke.

Certainly, you can help avoid indoor allergy flare-ups by identifying their root cause. Do a routine check of your home for signs of mold or dust build-up and get it taken care of immediately. But other more common causes of indoor allergies are harder to get rid of completely. If you’re like most folks, you will likely not want to part with a family pet, replace your wall-to-wall carpet, or buy expensive allergen covers for your pillows and mattress.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), air purifiers in your office or home are one of the most effective ways to improve indoor air quality

How do they work?

Air purifiers work by filtering out household pollutants and sanitizing the air that comes back out. An internal fan system sucks air into the unit where particles are trapped in an air filter. The efficiency of your air purifier depends greatly on the quality of the purifier you purchase and the surface area it can cover. Make sure to look for a unit that can adequately handle the square footage of your home or main living area and has multiple speed functions.

Most common air filters can grab airborne particles down to 0.3 microns. Picture pet hair, dust build-up, pollen, mold and visible smoke. It’s important to tackle these common indoor allergens since they are huge culprits in indoor allergies. But there are smaller particles in your home that may be causing uncomfortable symptoms, but can’t be removed using traditional air filtration methods. These include:

  • Bacteria and viruses
  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
  • Smelly off-gassing from paint, new carpet, or new furniture
  • Stale Odors
  • Ozone
  • Propane, Gasoline and Diesel Fumes

The Clean Air Station HealthWay Deluxe, offered by Wolverine Water, has a nine-stage filter that is 40x more effective than the average HEPA filter at removing ultrafine particles. This unique filter provides additional protection from harmful airborne microorganisms, chemicals, gasses, and smoke.

What are the health benefits of cleaner air?

Purifying your indoor air can help alleviate uncomfortable indoor allergies and help prevent asthma flare-ups. Air purifiers can even help reduce airborne viruses, like COVID-19 (though air purifiers alone are not enough to completely protect you from COVID).

While taking care of short-term irritants is helpful, purifying the air in your home or office can also help you prevent long-term illnesses. Long-term exposure to molds, VOCs and tobacco smoke can lead to chronic breathing issues and in some cases, cancer. Purifying the air you breathe is one step you can take towards protecting your health today and in the future.
